Why Is My Water Heater Screeching or Whining?
You shouldn’t have to listen to a screaming, whining, squealing or shrill noise coming from your water heater. There might be some type of problem with your water heater, depending on how it is sounding.
There are a variety of reasons why your water heater will make different noises. Some noises are just typical to the way a water heater works; however, there are many instances where the noise indicates a restriction in water flow, a faulty valve, mineral build up or possibly One or several parts that require repairs. Allowing the problem to develop into a bigger problem could potentially lead to a much more serious plumbing issue down the road.
Understanding exactly what your water heater is telling you can enable you to know when it is time to contact a professional plumber.
1. A restrictive valve may cause screaming
One of the biggest culprits for creating a high pitched noise with your water heater is restrictive water flow. It has happened to many people who have had their water heaters inspected and repaired when a temperature & Pressure relief valve (tp valve) shut off valve or another piece of equipment became clogged or restricted. As water tries to pass through a small space, it creates a “whistle”, “squeal” or “screech”.
A professional plumber will check all of your valves to see if they are creating the noise.
Note: do not block, remove or disable the temperature & Pressure relief valve. That is a safety device intended to relieve excessive Pressure or heat from the tank.
2. Mineral deposits are creating unusual sounds
In hard water, there are minerals like calcium and magnesium. Eventually, those minerals can build-up inside a standard tank style water heater. Those mineral deposits can disrupt the flow of water and/or the ability of the water heater to efficiently heat the water. Sometimes when water flows past the deposit, it produces strange sounds such as whineing, popping, crackeling and rumbley sounds.
Regularly performing maintenance on your water heater can slow down sediment and mineral build up.
3. The heated elements could possibly be causing the issue
The heated elements in electric water heaters warm the water. If a heating element develops heavy mineral build-up or fails, it can produce abnormal noises. A severely built-up heating element may also decrease the efficiency of your water heater and increase the amount of time required to get hot water.
If your noise seems to occur mostly during the actual process of heating your water, you may want to consider having a professional inspect your heating elements to find out if that is contributing to the noise.
4. Excessive household water Pressure can produce noise throughout the plumbing system
Excessive household water Pressure can produce loud noises in addition to banging pipes and/or noisy faucets and fixtures. High household Pressure puts additional stress on all your pipes, fixtures and valves within your plumbing system as well as on the components within your water heater. If you hear whining or Screeching accompanied by banging pipes and/or noisy faucets/fixtures then your home’s water Pressure probably needs to be checked.
A plumber can test your home’s water Pressure and let you know if you need a Pressure reducing valve installed or adjusted.
5. A failing water heater component is producing the noise
Inside every water heater, there are multiple components that can eventually wear out. These can include thermostats, heating elements, burners, valves, anodes and various types of controls.
Sometimes, high pitch noise increases or persists until you replace a worn-out part.
If your water heater is also producing less-than-hot water, leaky conditions, rust colored water and/or varying temperatures then this too is likely related to your failing component(s).
Do i have to replace my water heater because of its abnormal noise?
No! Unless your unit is old and/or has significant issues beyond simply being noisy.
Typically, a standard tank-type water heater will last about 8-12 years and is impacted by regular maintenance, local water quality, usage patterns and installation practices.
However, if an older model is producing abnormal noises and needs to be frequently serviced/repaired – replacing it may end up being more financially sensible compared to repairing an older model repeatedly.
